| James Henry Treloar emmigrated to Australia in the
late 1850's from Cornwall, England. He and his brother John
James settled in the Hamilton/Condah Swamp area in Western Victoria.
Both were farmers. Two sisters also emmigrated at around this time,
and also settled in Victoria James Henry married Hamutal Looker at Tahara or Wannan in 1867, and they had eleven children: ten daughters and one son. The son Thomas died at age six , and a daughter Hamutal died in infancy. The other nine daughter's lived to adulthood, however Emily Jane died at age 25 shortly after the birth of her fifth child. James Henry was born at St Keverne, on the far south Cornish coast of England, 3 July 1839. The Treloars had been well established in the mining area north of Wendron in Cornwall for hundreds of years and had interests in a number of farms. They also owned a mine which had come into the family through James Henry's paternal grandmother. It is believed that the family was established in Cornwall by three Trelore brothers who were persecuted Huguenots in France and who moved to Cornwall. It is also believed that all the Treloars worldwide originated from Wendron. Earlier spellings of the name Treloar are Treloarth and Trelowarth. Hamutal Looker was born in Cambridgeshire, England in 1845. At age eight she and her family, father David, mother Mary Ann and two younger sisters sailed for Australia aboard the Duke of Wellington, arriving at Portland, Victoria on 4 March 1853. They settled at Narrawong, near Portland, also in the Western districts. |
